2013 was a great year for the Grumps. It included several highs, a few lows, and a ton of stress and learning. It also included a shit load of spending. Here is 2013 and how I remember it.January: A bouncing baby boy (Baby Grump) joins the world, bringing with him more stress, fear, happiness and amusement than I thought possible. Black paste they pretend to call poop dominated the first few days of the year.
February and March: Adjusting to life with a baby. Long nights. Post Partum Depression. A Baptism. Unexpected visitors. Unwarranted and unwanted parenting advice. Cooing. Giggling. Stinky diapers.
April: The Grump’s decide to take advantage of the low interest rates/home prices and decide to move. We spent 3 weeks preparing our house to sell sandwiched around a week long trip to Hilton Head, SC.
May: Enduring the stupidity of our realtor showing our house at weird times and showing us houses clearly above our price range.
June: A week long trip to Destin, FL. A deal is reached on both the old and new house. Mrs. Grump returns to work. Mr. Grump unexpectedly becomes unemployed. A job search begins. Learning the ropes of a stay at home dad.
July: Both houses close. We move on the two hottest days of the year. Baby Grump becomes mobile. A week is spent in Los Angeles and San Diego, CA visiting family.
August: Rumors begin to fly of a stressful 2014. A job search ends.
September: BG and Mr. Grump go on an adventure to Norris Lake, TN to visit Mr. Grump’s parents at a lake house.
October: A stressful 2014 is confirmed when the Grump’s commit to a short-term work assignment in Brussels, Belgium to begin in November. Two weeks are spent in Belgium finding an apartment and getting acclimated. Thanksgiving is celebrated early as it is believed the Grumps will be overseas at the end of November.
November: Moving overseas is delayed due to Visa processing. Thanksgiving is celebrated for the second time. MG and Mr. Grump hash out a plan for Financial Independence. This blog begins.
December: MG spends two weeks in Belgium working as BG and Mr. Grump survive on their own. Christmas. New Years. Packing. More packing. Annoying Grandparents. Spoiling Grandparents. Cookies. Apple Pie. Steak Dinner. Christmas Eve.
Sprinkled in over the months were a few hospital stays for family and the growing up of Baby Grump.
Over those 12 months we spent nearly $70,000 on life. Whether it be satellite TV and cell phones or baby bills and mortgages. Money flew out the door at record speed. Even after realizing our stupidity in late November and beginning to put ourselves in a better financial position, December was no different. We spent a ton of money on a new water heater and paying off a car.
So now that 2013 is over. We, the Grumps, have safely landed and unpacked at our new temporary home in Brussels, Belgium.
